Dear IASSIDD Community.
In order to advance research, policy and practice in the field of parents and parenting with intellectual disability, a research world café was held as a pre-conference workshop at the 2024 IASSIDD World Congress in Chicago. The workshop was organized and moderated by Dr. Aunos and McConnell, and gathered together international researchers, clinicians and advocates. Central questions included the state of the current research base, barriers to research, effective practice and diversity and future directions that could help move research policy and practice forward.
With this, the IASSIDD Parenting with Intellectual Disabilities SIRG is inviting the community, both members and non-members to join a webinar to be facilitated by Dr. Marjorie Aunos – past Chair and current Executive Member of the Parents and Parenting with Disabilities Special Interest Research Group (SIRG), psychologist, activist, author and adjunct professor at both the University of Alberta and Brock University. During the online event she will present the results of the research world café and highlight the research questions that we believe we have answered, and questions that remain to be addressed in order to fill key gaps in scholarly knowledge and practice. The presentation of the findings will be followed by a discussion to identify research priorities and a collaborative action plan for the Parenting SIRG position paper which is set to be finalized in 2026.
