News Update – 24 February 2023

We invite you to the online event – Future directions: research, ethics, and people with intellectual disabilities which will be held on Tuesday 28th February 11:00am – 12:30pm (UK time).

There will be three presentations:

  • ‘People with profound intellectual disability as participants in research: Ethical and Method Considerations’ Dr Anne-Marie Martin, University College Cork, Ireland.
  • ‘The capacity to consent – a functional social construct? Reflections on research ethics and end of life care for people with intellectual disabilities’ Professor Sabine Schäper, Catholic University of Applied Sciences, Munster, Germany
  • ‘Ethics in precarious times: Persons living with the experience of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in times of natural catastrophes, other crises, pandemics and war’. Dr David Treanor, University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia

This will be followed by a group discussion focusing on the following areas:

  1. What are the future ethical challenges and opportunities in relation to research with people with intellectual disabilities?
  2. What could the Ethics SIRG do to address these?
  3. What themes should be developed into presentations / round tables for the 2024 IASSIDD World Congress?

Polyvagal Theory Basic, and it’s context in Development Delays

We invite you to the event “Polyvagal Theory Basic, and it’s context in Development Delays” on the 6 March 2023. The polyvagal theory is an exciting and important new focus in IDD. This innovative way of understanding the human autonomic nervous system has garnered enormous attention recently and promises to be an exciting future focus for our field. Participants will learn the principles of polyvagal theory, how it affects human development, and ways to apply this understanding to work in developmental disabilities.

Guest Speaker:

Sean Inderbitzen, LCSW is a clinician who works with people on the autism spectrum utilizing the principles of the polyvagal theory. He lectures and consults on autism for such entities as the U.S. state of Oklahoma Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, and Mayo Clinic Health System Northland.
